Writing Coaching

Writing coaching sessions are customized for you, the writer. That means that a plan is tailored to your unique goals as determined by a series of conversations with Karen about your writing project and the coaching process: Dream. Draft. Deliver.

Copy Editing

Editing and proofreading services are offered for your writing project. With nearly 30 years of experience as a professional writer, teacher, and coach, Karen helps writers enhance the effectiveness and clarity of their writing through the essential step of editing.

What Does a Writing Coach Do?

A writing coach helps a writer compose and move forward with their goals for their texts. As your writing coach, Karen will read your writing and engage you in conversations about the text—how it's organized, or how it holds together, or how its tone and voice creates the author's persona on the page, and more.

In every conversation, the more basic consideration will be you, the writer, and identifying your strengths and the areas you would like to improve. Throughout the coaching process, developing your abilities and confidence as a writer is paramount.

What Are Editing and Proofreading Services?

Editing, or proofreading, is the final step of preparing a text by ensuring that it is grammatically correct. Editing is a separate activity from coaching and comes at the very end of the writing process.

During editing, your piece of writing is carefully proofed for grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. This is an essential step in the creation of any text, not only to ensure accuracy but also to draw writers’ attention to the meanings that texts convey, their own as well as others’.

“Even with the time between our class and my application process, Dr. Fitts remains open and supportive of me and my writing.”

  • Autobiographers & Memoirists

FAQ

  • Both in-person and virtual writing coaching services are available. In-person writing coaching services are available in Portland, Oregon. Additional fees will apply for travel 10 or more miles outside of Portland. Virtual writing coaching is available through video conferencing to anyone in the United States.

  • This includes one-on-one time as well as time spent reviewing your work. For example, if you send a half-page double-spaced draft in a size 12 font, Karen may spend 15-minutes familiarizing herself with the text before your discussion. That leaves 45-minutes for a discussion. In this example, one hour will have been logged.

  • After your free 30-minute consultation, work begins after you have made payment for the duration of sessions that you’ve chosen: hourly, quarterly, or monthly.

Payment can be made by check or online via Venmo. Venmo is free if a bank account, debit card, or Venmo balance is used; they charge a 3% fee if using a credit card.
